Frequently Asked Questions....

Horticulture can be a technical industry, so we've answered some of the common questions below.  We are always happy to answer any questions you may have, just send us an email or even better give us a call.

Do I need a license to order Sun Gold plants?

We can take orders for G3 grafted kiwifruit plants, however at pickup of plants you must be in possession of a license. We give the orchard address and kpin to Zespri and they give clearance before any plants are dispatched.

Do I need a kpin?

A Kpin is required.  However, if you're not in possession of a valid Kpin, we can contact KVH to sort out plant orders for new developments.

What is a minimum order?

There is no minimum order as even a few replacement plants can be useful in an existing orchard situation.

Bounty vs. Bruno Rootstock

Bruno is a proven industry performer that grows fast, is sturdy and hardy.

Bruno rootstock grow better in well drained soils with good growing conditions.

Bounty is a newer rootstock and was designed to increase yield and fruit dry matter.    It is the preferred choice in heavy, poorly drained soil. Bounty can tolerate having wet feet on occasions. Bounty will not grow as vigorously as Bruno so it should be double planted.

When should kiwifruit be planted?

The best time is when the plants are dormant, typically during the months of June and July.  If you have irrigation, you can plant them anytime from spring to early summer

I ordered too many plants!  Can I return the overs?

To meet the requirements of KVH, our plants need to follow strict transport and storage requirements.  To adhere to these, we are sorry, but we cannot accept any returns.

Cryptomeria vs. Casurina?

Cryptomeria form dense shelters and are preferred as a wind stopper however their density can create wind turbulence. They are the perfect shelter for the prevailing wind. Casuarina tend to act more as a wind filter and are the best choice for a partially sheltered area where they help to slow the wind speed.
